Honestly, I didn’t realize that I could’ve drawn dots in this assignment in the first place. That’s why this ladybug ended up without any dot patterns. (QQ
The second insect is a stag beetle. I chose the stag beetle because it has a round body shape and the horn is also in a moon shape, which can be easily cut from a ball.
In this assignment, a mantis was relatively difficult to build due to its thin, long figure and sharp corners at the end of its body. As a result, I arranged consecutive semicircles as its stomach instead of a thinner shape cut from a big Styrofoam ball. I didn’t expect this strategy to work this well!
As you can see, the last strategy of placing the same shapes to form a body also appears in this piece of work. Additionally, I also added thin semicircles as its wings.
This artwork was inspired by the Chinese word “虫”. Although this word means “bugs” only in simplified Chinese, there’s not enough space to make “蟲”, which is the correct word for bugs in traditional Chinese. In addition, I also added antennae on the top of this work as a symbol of insects. The black marker strokes were written to make this word more obvious.
To end up, this series of works is essentially derived from references to insects, whether by directly using the word 'insect' or by replicating the form of their bodies.
