1. Sea Turtles:
Inspired by the foam balls' original patterns, I aimed to mimic the intricate designs seen on sea turtle shells.
2. Sun:
I intended to craft an artistic representation of the sun, much like the iconic one from Tangled. However, upon closer inspection, the shape amusingly resembles Patrick Star in an unusually cheerful mood—bringing an unexpected sense of fun to the piece.
3. Ladybugs:
In this section, I wanted to capture the delicate beauty of ladybugs amidst a field of flowers. The rounded foam balls naturally evoke their small, vibrant forms, creating a soft and gentle scene that celebrates nature.
4. Pacman:
Cutting the foam ball in half immediately brought back memories of Pacman from my childhood. The irregular arrangement of the smaller foam pieces, scattered around the board, mirrors the pixelated aesthetics of retro games, infusing the artwork with a nostalgic touch.
5. Solar System:
Using foam balls of various sizes, I constructed a solar system—though not to scale. Each ball represents a different planet, with Jupiter's ring creatively inspired by a previous assignment. The arrangement is playful yet intentional, showcasing the diversity in scale and form within our universe.
My Thinking and Design Process
It is the first time that we have played with 3D materials during the basic design courses. At first, I didn’t have any single thought about what to do. But, once I started to work with my hand and attempt to collage some foam pieces even though I had no plan in my brain. Interestingly, ideas popped up, and plans were formed during the process of crafting.
