**核心概念:**More-than-Human Temporality(超越人類的時間性)、Bio-HCI (生物人機互動)、Care Ethics in Design(設計中的關懷倫理)、Organism-Centered Design(以有機體為中心的設計)

We explore how actively engaging with the temporalities of a nonhuman organism can lead to multispecies understanding. To do so, we design a bio-digital calendar that brings attention to the growth and health of kombucha SCOBY, a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast that lives in a tea medium. The non-invasive bio-digital calendar surrounds the kombucha SCOBY to track (via sensors) and enhance (via sound) its growth. As we looked at and listened to our kombucha SCOBY calendar on a daily basis, we became attuned to the slowness of kombucha SCOBY. This multisensory noticing practice with the calendar, in turn, destabilized our preconceived human-centered positionality, leading to a more humble, decentered relationship between us and the organism. Through our experiences with the bio-digital calendar, we gained a better relational multispecies understanding of temporalities based on care, which, in the long term, might be a solution to a more sustainable future.
為此,我們設計了一個生物數位日曆,以引起人們對康普茶 SCOBY(一種生活在茶介質中的細菌和酵母的共生培養物)的生長和健康的關注。

In this pictorial, we embrace the unique temporalities of living organisms as an opportunity for building deeper, more sustainable relationships with digital artifacts. To this end, we contribute a bio-digital calendar that contextualizes time based on “the rate at which [living kombucha SCOBY (Symbiotic Cultures of Bacteria and Yeast)] can engage in operations” [14]. We interact with the organism through the bio-digital calendar as a means to incite humans toward recognizing and attuning to nonhuman temporalities.
In contrast to traditional calendars that contextualize time based on the temporality of earth’s rotations or the temporal position of stars, our bio-digital calendar contextualizes time based on an organism’s growth and health—ultimately challenging the historical, social, political, and cultural functionality of traditional timekeeping devices that seek to organize and discipline people’s time in the age of capitalism [6, 69]. Accordingly, our bio-digital calendar sensitizes us as humans to our own embodied, situated experience of time and encourages us to decenter ourselves by harmonizing our temporalities to the temporalities of another agentic organism.
We designed our interactive bio-digital calendar to track the daily changes in kombucha SCOBY’s health and growth via sensors and communicate these changes via sound. We engaged with the kombucha SCOBY calendar for a few moments each day, during which we observed the organism, listened to a corresponding tone of sound dictated by the organism and our code, and interpreted health data. This daily practice of engaging with the bio-digital calendar through actions of care [52, 87] led us to gain a deeper understanding of kombucha SCOBY’s natural rhythmic temporalities. We view this multispecies understanding as a step towards Donna Haraway’s multispecies kinship [34]; wherein by understanding an organism’s temporalities (and correspondingly its livingness [40]), we can begin to better recognize nonhuman agencies and flatten typically hierarchical relations between humans and nonhumans.
In this pictorial, we contribute a bio-digital calendar that facilitates human recognition and understanding of nonhuman agencies by enhancing the temporalities of and promoting acts of care towards kombucha SCOBY. We present our entire design process from observing the growth of kombucha SCOBY and analyzing its biofilm to setting design goals and iterating through three prototypes. We conclude with reflections on our interactions with our kombucha SCOBY calendar and broader recommendations for designing bio-digital artifacts that support multispecies understanding.
